Born in Leipzig, Germany, September 21, 1904, Hans Hartung devotes himself throughout his career to non-figurative art. His meeting with Wassili Kansinkij in 1925 is crucial because from that moment on, his artistic expression is affiliated to the field of the abstract and informal. In 1936 he moved to Paris to escape Nazi persecution. Until 1945 his career is bracketed by the vicissitudes of history and its participation in the Foreign Legion. When he returned to painting, his works are marked by broad gestures and signs that intersect on the canvas full of expression. In 1946 he was naturalized French in 1960 and received the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale. He died in Antibes, France, in 1989.
